Manitoba at Christmas was nominated for the Manitoba Day Award from the Association for Manitoba Archives, in the popular history category. Thanks to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections for nominating the book! The eventual winner was Caricatures by Bernard Mulaire (Les Éditions du Blé, 2016).
The anthology is at the printers now and should be available in approximately two weeks. A big thank you to everyone who contributed their stories, photos, and recipes!
I just came across some great video footage of Winnipeg’s Santa Parade in 1962: http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2588315874/
Thanks to everyone for their submissions! All contributors will be notified in the next few days regarding the status of their stories.
A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! I’m looking forward to receiving more of your stories in the New Year.
I started going through all the submissions I have received so far. I have a quite few stories up until the 1950s and ’60s, but it looks like we’re currently short on material from the 1970s onward.
Geographically, most of the submissions are coming from southern Manitoba, so I would love to receive some stories from further north.
A few people have asked for an extension to the Dec. 31 deadline for submissions. I realize that everyone is busy with the holiday season, so the deadline will be extended to January 31, 2016. If you are planning on submitting a story after December, please get in touch with me soon, since I would like to know how many more stories to expect.
And for those of you who have been wanting to write something, but you didn’t think you had any good holiday memories, who knows, maybe you’ll have something to write about after this Christmas!
If anyone has photos of the old downtown Eaton’s display windows at Christmas, please let me know. I would like to include a few pictures of them in the book.
